Mackenzie Davis plays Fonda Howander, a marine researcher who becomes involved in the investigation.

What Happens in Below?
The story begins in a small Newfoundland community where Calvin Penney is trying to survive as a fisherman while dealing with painful memories from his past.
When an unidentified creature appears beneath the ocean, the town is suddenly placed in danger.
Calvin’s priority becomes protecting his children and keeping the community together.
At the same time, he and Fonda investigate the creature and the secrets surrounding the island.
The series also explores the changing relationship between the town’s residents and the environment around them. The creature mystery provides the show’s central thriller element.
That combination makes Below more than a straightforward monster story. The supernatural threat is connected to a community already facing major changes to its way of life.
How Many Episodes Does Below Have?

Netflix describes it as a six-part limited series, with all six episodes scheduled to arrive on Netflix on October 8, 2026.

Where Was Below Filmed?
Below was filmed in Newfoundland, Canada, giving the series its distinctive coastal setting.
The location is an important part of the show’s identity because the ocean, fishing community, and isolated coastal environment all contribute to the mystery.
Is Below a Movie or TV Show?
Despite some searches referring to Below as a Netflix movie, the 2026 Below is a TV limited series, not a movie.
Netflix officially lists it as a six-episode limited series.
This distinction is important because there is also an older 2002 film titled Below, which is unrelated to the new Netflix production.
The 2026 Netflix series stars Josh Hartnett, Mackenzie Davis, and Charlie Heaton and is centered on the Newfoundland sea-creature mystery.
Is Below Based on a True Story?
No. Below is presented as a fictional thriller series.
The story comes from creator Jesse McKeown, with the series combining a fictional sea-creature mystery with themes connected to the challenges facing coastal communities.
Why Is Below Getting Attention?
The combination of Josh Hartnett, creature horror, and a Newfoundland setting gives Below a different identity from many conventional Netflix thrillers.
The series also arrives as part of Netflix’s October 2026 lineup, with Below scheduled for October 8.
For audiences searching for a new supernatural thriller, the show’s six-episode format also makes it relatively easy to watch as a complete story.

Final Thoughts
Below, Netflix 2026 combines creature horror with a character-driven family story.
Josh Hartnett leads the series as Calvin Penney, a Newfoundland fisherman forced to confront an unexplained threat while trying to protect his children and his community. Mackenzie Davis and Charlie Heaton co-star as the mystery surrounding the sea creature becomes increasingly dangerous.
The Below Netflix release date is October 8, 2026, and all six episodes will be available on the same day.
With its isolated coastal setting, mysterious creature, and family-focused storyline, Below could be an interesting October pick for Netflix viewers looking for something darker and more suspenseful.
