What Is The One About Matthew Perry About?
The One About Matthew Perry is an intimate documentary series about the actor’s life, career, friendships, and legacy.
Matthew Perry became an international star through his role as Chandler Bing on Friends, appearing throughout all 10 seasons of the sitcom.
However, Netflix’s documentary is designed to go beyond his most famous character.
The series will examine Perry’s journey from a rising comedy performer to one of television’s best-known stars while also exploring his private life and the people who knew him away from the spotlight.
Netflix describes the documentary as a story told by people who knew and loved Perry, rather than simply another retrospective about his Hollywood career.
Why Is It Called The One About Matthew Perry?
The title is a clear reference to Friends.
Many episodes of the iconic sitcom were famously titled using variations of “The One…”, making the phrase instantly recognizable to fans.
Using the same structure for a documentary about Matthew Perry gives the project an immediate connection to the show that made him famous.
Perry played Chandler Bing from 1994 through 2004, appearing in all 236 episodes of Friends.
That connection will likely make the documentary particularly appealing to longtime Friends viewers.
Who Is Directing The One About Matthew Perry?
Mary Robertson is directing The One About Matthew Perry.
Robertson is an Emmy-winning filmmaker and is also serving as an executive producer on the documentary.
The series is produced by Maxine Productions, a Sony Pictures Television company.
The executive producers are Mary Robertson, Lisa Kalikow, Eli Holzman, and Aaron Saidman. Lora Moftah serves as co-executive producer, while Jessica Call is a producer.
Who Appears in The One About Matthew Perry?
Because this is a documentary rather than a scripted series, there is no traditional cast.
Instead, Netflix has confirmed appearances and testimony from people who knew Matthew Perry personally and professionally.
One of the most important participants is Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick.
The documentary also includes testimony from Perry’s lifelong best friends, creative collaborators, and people who supported him throughout his life and career.
This gives the documentary a much more personal perspective than simply looking back at Perry’s television career.
Will the Friends Cast Appear?
At the time of writing, Netflix has not officially confirmed appearances from Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, or David Schwimmer.
That is important because speculation about the Friends cast may appear online, but Netflix’s official announcement specifically confirms Perry’s sister, lifelong friends, creative collaborators, and others who knew him.
Unless Netflix announces additional participants, reports about specific Friends cast appearances should be treated as unconfirmed.
What New Footage Will the Documentary Include?
One of the most interesting elements of The One About Matthew Perry is its access to private family material.
Netflix has confirmed that the documentary includes unreleased photographs and videos from the Perry family’s private archive.
The footage will be combined with firsthand testimony and memories from people who knew Perry.
That could give viewers a side of Matthew Perry that was rarely visible during his years as a major television star.
How Will The One About Matthew Perry Tell His Story?
The documentary will combine personal memories with archival material to explore Perry’s life and career.
According to Netflix, the series traces his journey from a rising comedic performer to the actor who became internationally famous as Chandler Bing.
At the same time, the documentary looks beyond his public image and explores the private struggles he experienced.
The result should be a portrait of Perry that focuses not only on the celebrity but also on the person behind the character.
Matthew Perry and Friends
For millions of viewers, Matthew Perry remains inseparable from Chandler Bing.
His performance became one of the defining elements of Friends, thanks to Chandler’s sarcastic humor, awkwardness, vulnerability, and distinctive comic timing.
Perry shared the screen with Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer throughout the show’s decade-long run.
The documentary’s title itself acknowledges how closely Perry’s legacy is connected to the sitcom.

Will The One About Matthew Perry Have a Trailer?
Netflix has confirmed the documentary series and its October 27 release date.
However, an official full trailer had not been announced in the latest Netflix information available at the time of writing.
That means viewers should be careful with videos or social-media posts claiming to be an official trailer unless they come directly from Netflix.
Once Netflix releases official trailer footage, this article can be updated with a full breakdown of the new material.
How Many Episodes Is The One About Matthew Perry?
The One About Matthew Perry consists of three parts.
Netflix officially describes the project as a three-part documentary series.
Individual episode titles and runtimes have not yet been fully detailed in Netflix’s announcement.
The three-part format should give the filmmakers enough room to explore Perry’s career, relationships, personal life, and legacy without compressing everything into a single documentary.
Where Can You Watch The One About Matthew Perry?
The One About Matthew Perry will stream on Netflix.
Netflix has already created an official title page for the documentary, listing it as a 2026 documentary series.
You can find the official listing on Netflix.
There is currently no announced theatrical release for the documentary.
What Makes The Documentary Different?
The biggest difference is its personal approach.
Instead of focusing only on Matthew Perry’s career, The One About Matthew Perry brings together:
- Testimony from Perry’s sister
- Stories from lifelong friends
- Memories from creative collaborators
- Previously unreleased family photographs
- Previously unreleased family videos
- A look at Perry beyond Chandler Bing
- A three-part documentary structure
Netflix says the series aims to reveal more about the person behind the public figure.
That could make the documentary particularly meaningful for viewers who grew up watching Friends but knew relatively little about Perry’s life outside the sitcom.
Is The One About Matthew Perry a Friends Documentary?
Not exactly.
Although Friends and Chandler Bing are obviously an important part of Matthew Perry’s story, The One About Matthew Perry is focused on Perry himself.
The documentary follows his wider career and personal life rather than simply revisiting the history of Friends.
The involvement of his sister and lifelong friends also suggests that the series will spend significant time exploring his life away from the television set.
What Will Matthew Perry’s Family Contribute?
Mia Perry Bowick is one of the most important confirmed voices in the documentary.
Netflix says the series features never-before-heard testimony from Perry’s sister as well as previously unreleased material from the family’s private archive.
That family perspective could provide some of the documentary’s most personal moments.
Rather than seeing Perry only through interviews and television clips, viewers will have access to memories and material connected to his life outside the entertainment industry.
Is There an Official Release Date?
Yes.
Netflix has officially confirmed October 27, 2026, as the premiere date for The One About Matthew Perry.
Because the release date comes directly from Netflix, there is no need to rely on rumors or unofficial scheduling information.
The documentary is expected to become a major streaming title around the end of October.
